Reading about the Oregon Community Foundation's massive $21 million gift honestly almost moved me to tears. After years of watching arts funding disappear (particularly during the pandemic) and more federal cuts to come, it was incredible to see an organization step up this big. I love that the money is not just going to the "biggest" or the "baddest" organizations, it is also going to the small and the rural. That feels like a very conscious decision and a real investment in community arts, not just the "big" organizations. I also think it's really smart to let the groups decide if they wanted the funding for projects or just operational costs. Not every organization can think about new programs when they are worried about helping their staff or just keeping the lights on. It’s unfortunate that Oregon ranks so low in the country with arts funding, but maybe this sort of thing will spur more private donors to cover the gaps. I hope other states took notice, as this sort of support can quite literally keep a cultural ecosystem alive.
