I am absolutely thrilled that Wicked will be receiving a singalong version of the film because of the recent controversies around singing in theater. Coming off of the Eras Tour Pro-shot, many people were complaining about rude fans singing along in the movie theater and ruining the film experience for them, and I completely agree. While I understand wanting to enjoy the music and showing appreciation through reciting lines or singing along, many people who are going to see Wicked are going to see Ariana Grande or because of the incredible marketing team who has collaborated with almost every major company in the past month. If I were in their shoes, I would be strongly dissuaded from seeing the movie based on the people online threatening to sing the entire film. I will probably go to see the singalong version if I can, along with the regular film to get both experiences. I hope the film does justice overall to the stage production!
I remember first hearing about the Wicked movie a while ago, and I would occasionally read updates whenever they came out. Each update only increased my enthusiasm for the movie; the casting, the promotional pictures, and the trailer. Recently I’ve been seeing a lot of articles warning audience members, specifically musical theatre lovers and hardcore Wicked fans, to not sing along at the movie theater. I absolutely despise it when the audience sings along inside a movie theater when it is not meant to be a sing-along. I haven’t seen the movie yet, but I remember what it was like to watch The Eras Tour movie. People talked all throughout the movie, screamed, and made the viewing experience obnoxious. I hope that when I go to see Wicked (not the sing-along version), the viewing experience is much better. I’m looking forward to hearing the cast members and fully immersing myself in the movie.
I mean, this comes as no surprise! It was very prevalent from the beginning that Wicked would need to be a movie with some sing-along dedicated performances. While I believe that movie theaters should be quiet, I also see and share in the joy of being able to express yourself in a room with other theatre lovers. I find this similar to the Era's Tour movie which people really just treated as an opportunity to go sing, dance, and pretend like they were at the concert. This was so fun and everyone was so kind when I went and it really felt like we were there, sharing something. Being a cinematic movie though, Wicked definitely deserves, and is intended to be viewed in, quiet showings especially since it is new and the vocals are amazing. However, it is in human nature to want to sing along and I think it's nice that they are offering sing along versions if anyone wants that experience.
Wicked is the movie I’m looking forward to the most this year, with it being a story based on the smash hit wicked I feel like it’s bound to be enough of a success to have specific screenings be sing a long showings especially for a movie where the songs are fan favorites, I think it’s good for wicked to have some of these showings especially considering a large part of the people who will go see the movie are likely musical theater fans. I know people singing in the theater is a big concern for people who go to see the wicked movie (and likely so please don’t sing along for a movie that isn’t a sing along experience it just ruins things for everyone else) so having a showing like this will probably alleviate that fear for most people now that the people who want to sing can just go to a sing along showing(it’s the perfect solution for everyone and a sing along showing sounds like it’ll be fun for the fans that have seen the original stage play)
