‘Wicked’ Costume Designer Paul Tazewell Returns to Oz
The New York Times: Paul Tazewell was 16 years old and living in Akron, Ohio, the first time he designed costumes for “The Wiz.” It was a high school production, and much of the work happened in his family’s dining room.
He has been summoned back to Oz several times since that first show — a workshop here, an NBC broadcast there. So when the director Jon M. Chu asked him to design the costumes for Universal’s long-awaited film adaptation of the Broadway musical “Wicked,” there was little learning curve to speak of.

I have been bombarded with so much Wicked content over the past week, and I have read more articles concerning Wicked than I can count. I have also followed Paul Tazewell’s career ever since I found out he designed the costumes for Hamilton. However, I never knew he was from Akron, Ohio, which is barely a 45 minute drive from my hometown. It is inspiring to know that this world famous costume designer comes from a background similar to myself, and it gives me greater confidence in my future in the industry.
I have not been able to see Wicked yet, but I have seen enough promotional pictures to see that the costumes are absolutely fantastical. I wonder how much of the design ideas were in the back of Tazewell’s mind for years because of his early work on related shows, and how much was original to this film specifically.
