Eddie Redmayne Was 'Upset by the Backlash' to His 'Cabaret' Casting
www.indiewire.com: Eddie Redmayne learned his “lesson” 10 years after starring in the 2015 biopic “The Danish Girl.” Redmayne, who portrayed trans activist Lili Elbe, a trans woman who received one of the earliest known gender-affirming surgeries, previously said in 2021 that he “wouldn’t take it on now” as a cisgender man.

I agree with Redmayne’s views on character interpretation. When the script does not clearly define the character setting, I think the creator has room for his or her own interpretation. Of course, this also includes the interpretation of sexual orientation, which is also part of the interpretation of the character. Whether it is the director or the actor, they have the right to make their own choices when choosing how to interpret the content of the script. I have also had such an experience. When I was doing preparations before the production started, I had my own preliminary understanding of the script after reading it. But after watching the final presentation of the director, designer, and actor, it was different from my initial idea. For this kind of revival musical, the audience may be familiar with the script and music and have seen the effects of other versions. When watching the new version, if the audience finds that it is different from their own inner setting, they may naturally have their own preferred setting. But as Redmayne said, "I didn’t take the part on without knowing exactly what I was doing." If this can be done, the pure character can be presented to the audience.
