Taiwan’s Cloud Gate Dance Theatre Invites Pittsburgh to Experience Cultural Memories
onStage Pittsburgh: Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan’s 13 Tongues will provide a new beginning to Pittsburgh Dance Council’s 2024-25 season, presented by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, on Saturday at the Byham Theater, after the originally scheduled opener, Dada Masilo of South Africa, canceled its North American tour due to travel complications.

This article caught my attention because my mother was born in Taiwan, a large number of my extended family live in Taipei, and I have been there ten times throughout my life. Taipei is my favorite place in the world, and I feel comfortable and at home there. I’ve never had any reason to go to the Wanhua area of Taipei, and I’ve never heard of Monga. I know that Dihua street is one of the oldest places in the city, and I had always assumed that it was the oldest. Now I am interested in going to Monga next time I go to Taiwan, especially after reading about 13 Tongues. I think that it is wonderful for a Taiwanese production, and Taiwanese culture in general to receive more recognition and attention in the US. It would also be nostalgic to see a show based off of the people and atmosphere of the place that half of me calls home.
