Arthur Max (Gladiator II production designer) video interview
GoldDerby: At 78, Arthur Max has spent much of his professional life working alongside Ridley Scott. He describes the filmmaker as a “force of nature,” something Max likely realized back to their first feature film collaboration, 1997’s “G.I. Jane.” In the years that followed, it was Max who helped Scott realize his visions for 1970s Harlem (“American Gangster”), the far reaches of space (“The Martian,” “Prometheus”), and even 12th-century Jerusalem (“Kingdom of Heaven”).

In the article, the production designer talks a lot about how Gladiator II has scaled up from the first Gladiator. The sets are grander and allow for a fully immersive setting that will draw the audience in. In the trailer for Gladiator II, the success of Arthur Max is shown throughout the video. Most of the trailer takes place throughout the stunning visuals that the movie’s scenes are set in. The trailer is a series of stunning shots, and gorgeous visuals. As an action movie, they draw in their audiences with the promise of even greater scales of warfare. They even mention in the article that part of the story was taken from fan theories. The way Ridley Scott tells his artistic story is taken from the inspiration that the settings are able to provide for the characters, and it makes the movie come alive. It makes sense why Arthur Max and Ridley Scott have been so successful together; they thrive from the combination of their work.
