I think it’s great that more and more off-Broadway crews are trying to unionize and ensure protections for themselves and other crew members. It’s also great that IATSE is now fighting for them to achieve a fair contract with Atlantic Theater Company and not accepting the watered down contract that is not fair to the workers. However, it is disheartening to hear that Atlantic Theater Company is still fighting IATSE and not working with them to protect their workers. It’s still so crazy to me that even in this industry where being unionized is the norm and we strive to protect workers and artists, so many big theater companies are still unwilling to do their part and will even actively fight against the unions and the workers that they protect. Without the workers, these theaters are nothing and it’s important that theaters remember that. I hope that this contract gets settled soon and the workers are adequately protected.
