The ‘Anora’ Mansion: The Behind the Scenes of Where They Shot
www.indiewire.com: The first hour of “Anora” is designed to feel like a Cinderella story. Ani (Mikey Madison), a Brooklyn sex worker, gets swept up into the whirlwind lifestyle and absurd wealth of Ivan (Mark Eydelshteyn), the 19-year-old son of a Russian oligarch who goes from her client to husband in the course of a week.

I saw Anora at the Manor Theater last Tuesday. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I was really surprised by how emotional it made me. I grew up in Jersey about thirty minutes from Coney Island (where most of the movie takes place) and most of my family still lives there, so I spent a lot of summers and weekends on the boardwalk with my sister. A lot of people who have seen the movie have commented on how over-the-top and exaggerated Anora’s Brooklyn accent (and her personality as a whole) is, but I thought director Sean Baker absolutely nailed the culture and tone of Coney Island. I don’t get homesick often in Pittsburgh, but I definitely felt it a little bit seeing a place I love so much represented on screen. Sean Baker also directed the Florida Project, another one of my favorite movies, and he does a great job of capturing the beauty of places that are too often dismissed as run-down or unimportant.
