The Verge: Teenage Engineering’s new OP-XY is a portable synthesizer and sequencer that looks similar to the company’s OP–1 Field. But functionally it’s instead a more capable upgrade to the company’s six-year-old OP-Z, with a stronger focus on layering sounds with various effects and a steeper $2,299 price tag.

I love reading about new technology and gear coming onto the scene for sound and lighting. In both areas people are always finding new ways to outdo themselves and make something smaller, faster, easier to use, or have more capabilities. I think there’s something magical in everyone working in their own ways to push our industry forward. On a more personal level, I really like reading about sound gear and all the bells and whistles they have. It makes me excited to get my hands on the gear and learn the ins and outs of the technology. Hearing what is going on in the field right now makes me wonder what will be the hot new piece of gear will be when I join the professional world. Overall, reading about the OP-XY is inspiring me to continue working towards my goal of being a sound engineer and start learning about how all of it fits within the theatre context and the larger world of live entertainment.
