Schmigadoon Stage Version: Creator Cinco Paul on New Songs, Script
www.indiewire.com: Season 1 of “Schmigadoon!” was a welcome bright spot in the waning days of the COVID-19 pandemic when it premiered in July 2021. The relentlessly cheery homage to and gentle spoof of Golden Age Broadway musicals (think Rodgers and Hammerstein, “Brigadoon,” and “The Music Man”) was a throwback that also heralded a new voice in American musicals with Cinco Paul‘s infectious songs and witty scripts. But the experience wasn’t quite what Paul had in mind when Apple TV+ first greenlit the show.

It is super interesting to hear about the process that happens when someone has an idea to create a musical based off of a preexisting show such as movie or television because it is very cool to see what goes through their mind and their thought processes that happen throughout the creation process. I wonder what the design processes were like and how they decided what to incorporate and what to change from the original script. I am personally not the biggest fan of when movies are turned into musicals and vice versa because it can often fall short of audience expectations and all the hype that builds around the show disperses the moment that it goes up because expectations are not met. I will say that there are definitely instances where it can be done super well and I will give credit where credit is due but often that is not the case and the thing that came second is almost always bad because it doesn’t capture the spirit of the original show.
