Ars Technica: On Friday, TriStar Pictures released Here, a $50 million Robert Zemeckis-directed film that used real time generative AI face transformation techniques to portray actors Tom Hanks and Robin Wright across a 60-year span, marking one of Hollywood's first full-length features built around AI-powered visual effects.

The concept of the film Here is interesting. I’m currently thinking about how many jobs the AI de-aging technology with Metaphysic took away. What would have needed more actors, more CGI programs and animators as well as makeup artists. I think that’s what is most scary about AI at the moment, because of how many jobs it could take away. Much like the rest of the article states, the Metaphysic isn’t the only product out there that is working on de-aging techniques and used in current films today, and it’s alarming at how easily this program is able to complete work that would cost hundreds or millions of dollars and months of work. What’s most alarming with this technology is the fact that it’s able to bring back character’s from the dead and use them in new works. I can hope that legislation and unions will continue to fight for the rights to their intellectual and individual properties as AI continues to grow.
Having read the graphic novel that inspired this movie I cannot wait to see how they have adapted it for the screen. These days there have been so many creative uses of AI technology, but it hasn’t been this mainstream and out there. Having actors that have been in the media for the times that the film is de aging them to will most likely help with creating realistic masking and AI training. The ever expanding prowess of AI is honestly frightening, I can imagine the fear of wondering if clips show on the news are real or generated. As long as this use of AI is limited to the entertainment, wich i doubt it will be, we are safe in our viewing of news. I understand the feelings that many people have about being replaced by digital versions of themselves, but I hope that this fear doesn’t hinder the advancement of technology anymore than encourage the development of safety features for and understanding of AI.
