Maybe Happy Ending: The Most Original, Most Beautiful Musical In Eons

Observer: A new Broadway musical about people in love? OK. A new Broadway musical about people in love who are robots? I don’t think so. That’s what I feared when I arrived with trepidation at the Belasco Theatre to see Maybe Happy Ending and stayed to be totally overwhelmed by the best, most beautiful, innovational and original musical I’ve seen in what feels like eons.

I’ve been hearing so much about this show and even though I have not been able to see it yet, from what I have heard I think it could very well be one of the best new shows on Broadway this season. I was initially very skeptical because at first glance, the concept of two AI robots falling in love does not seem like it would translate very well into musical theater. I was worried that the story would not be interesting and that the musical would flop. However, everyone I know who has seen it has said it was deeply emotional and moving and everyone has recommended that I see it as soon as I can. This article has emphasized that for me and definitely moved it to the top of my list of shows that I want to see. I hope that it lasts on Broadway for a long time and I’m able to see it.

I’ve heard such amazing things about this show and hope that I can see it. When I first heard about it, it reminded me a little bit of a CMU student-written musical that was produced last spring (Emote), which also dealt with robots/AI/humans and love. It’s interesting to me that art is being made about robots branching into human feelings, but it also makes sense as there are more and more robots and other forms of technology and AI in our day to day lives. It’s a clever detail that the one robot is a newer model, which means that she has more features and more memory but lasts less long than the older model; reading that made me think of my mom’s stand mixer that my dad has slowly replaced all the plastic parts in for metal parts because the manufacturer put in cheaper plastic components that wear out much faster, but the old models had metal components so you can still buy them online as replacements. This musical sounds really cute and also really clever, and before I read this article I had also heard it called the “most original” show on Broadway at the moment, which is super cool and exciting and I hope I can go see it.

What I loved most about reading this article was the obvious and absolute joy present in the author’s writing. There are a lot of shows that are very good, but once in a while you come across a show that is just pure beauty to you. It’s a show that fills your heart completely and makes you say yes, I will face tomorrow. Different shows do that for different people, but when it happens to you it stays with you. I have my fair share of those shows, shows that have filled my heart to bursting. I think we as theatre makers forget that sometimes, because this is our job and our life. But I think it’s important to remember sometimes that we are making magic for other people, making something they will carry with them in their heart forever. This article reminded me of that and I think that reminder came at a good time.
