In ‘Kimberly Akimbo,’ a 62-year-old actor plays a dying 16-year-old ‘girl who wanted to live’

Datebook: Kimberly is dying. Not right this instant, but four times as fast as the rest of us are. She’s just turned 16, but she looks in her 60s, and 16 is the life expectancy for people with her rare (fictional) genetic condition.

Kimberly Akimbo is one of the best musicals I saw in 2022/23. I saw the Broadway production in the Booth Theatre in New York. One of the reasons I loved it was the perspective it provided on adolescence especially for individuals whose life is not necessarily normal. I remember sitting in the house and deeply relating to the song the Inevitable Turn because when living in an environment with emotionally abusive individuals, we exist walking on eggshells and this song emulates what it feels like on any random regular Tuesday. It's also truly wonderful to watch the wonderment of adolescence presented in such a unique way. It has a weight to it, but the aspects of youth scream at you because of the old body presenting it to you. It is truly a special musical that is fun, catchy, and deeply emotional. I would truly recommend it to anyone who is looking for some catharsis but also force you to think about what is actually important in life. And how do we live a fulfilling one with the time we have to share with each other.

To my shock, I have not seen Kimberly Akimbo yet. I really want to see it and I have heard really wonderful things about the production. Every time I go into the city to do a show, I always pass by the Booth Theater, which is where Kimberly Akimbo is running. The story behind this musical is super sweet and wholesome, and after reading about this show I kind of agree. It also seems kind of sad because this 16-year-old girl has a health disorder that causes her body to age faster, so at age 16, her body looks and functions like it is 60 years old. The show is still running on Broadway and I will be home for winter break, so maybe I should go see it before it eventually closes. I know the show is also on a national tour which is super cool. What an incredible show this is!
