First Look Inside the Newly-Restored Majestic Theatre

www.broadwayworld.com: Guests were invited on stage to experience the original orchestrations from Gypsy with a 26-piece orchestra, which have not been heard live in nearly 60 years. Following the presentation, which included welcome remarks from Robert E. Wankel (Chairman and CEO of The Shubert Organization), six-time Tony Award-winning director George C. Wolfe, and six-time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald, guests were invited to explore the theatre to take in the renovations up close.

The Majestic Theatre looks wildly different now from how it looked when I saw The Phantom of the Opera. Reading this article about the process of restoring this amazing theater was such a cool insight into the behind the scenes that often we don’t even think about. This is also not the first theater to be refurbished on such a massive scale recently and I think this is a good sign both for the future of Broadway and for the theater industry as a whole. If producers, theater owners, and investors are willing to be putting in such massive amounts of money into refurbishing the infrastructure of Broadway, it must mean they have high hopes for the future successes of Broadway. I hope I will get the chance to see Gypsy this upcoming season and many more shows at both this stunning theater and other new, old, and refurbished Broadway theaters.

I have never seen Phantom of The Opera or been in the Majestic Theatre before. It’s absolutely magnificent. I was digging and looking at photos from before the renovations, and it looked nothing like it did before. It seems like a completely new theater. The details put into both the old and new Majestic Theatre is really unique. I wish I could see Phantom of The Opera while it was still open on Broadway. I regret not seeing it. Also, the Majestic has been around for 97 years, that is really crazy. This was a restoration project to restore the Majestic’s Gypsy. This restoration will speak to the Broadway Theatre District, the cultural fabric of NYC, America, and the entire world according to Broadway World. Throughout the renovations, the floors were fixed, all the electrics were updated, in addition to new HVAC for the entire theater. I really wish I got to see Phantom, especially the chandelier falling.

The Shubert Organization holds a special place in my heart because my high school was nominated for the Shubert awards and the Organization itself is so beneficial to our theatre community. I believe it's absolutely fantastic that The Shubert Organization has revealed this new and improved, renovated! Majestic theatre, after all the hard work they have put in over the past almost two years. The majestic originally opened in 1927 and has been the venue for certain shows like The Phantom of the Opera. Now coming to Broadway is gypsy which I believe is starring Audra McDonald. It's nice to see the majestic being used like it once was but now new and improved and it gives it that serotonin feel that one often craves. They didn't simply just slap on a coat of paint and call the majestic well majestic, they really give it a new look; they went for more of a modern feel and added extravagant bathrooms, food stands, and of course digital signage while retaining classic elements like the chandelier and delicate plaster decorations. Plus, hearing live music from Gypsy, which hasn't been played in nearly 60 years, adds to the overall specialness of this occasion!
