Prosthetics and makeup are so vital to a movie like The Batman, and to a character like The Penguin. The conditions in which prosthetics and makeup is kept is very important, so even more so are the working conditions for the actor. The fact that the actor claimed that the ‘strike saved’ him is very concerning - cast and crew should be in working situations that are conducive to not only good work, but a healthy lifestyle while in the workplace. The discussion on the actor’s almost-Method acting (staying in character off-camera) is interesting to me, because such a dark character would be difficult to ‘exist within’ for so many hours on top of the 2.5 to 5 hours filming per day. The makeup/prosthetic artists’ perspective on this is so important for the performance itself, too, as the actor has to act through and with it. The actor works alongside the work of the artists, not against it.
