I’ve never used a stud finder but they seem incredibly useful for home use. The big thing I noticed however is how inaccurate they can be and how you have to triple check where your studs are by moving the stud locator back and forth. The article did cause me to think about a few things. If, for example, you were mounting something that would take up most of the stud wall, the stud wall might not be straight up and down. I see that in all likelihood you would use your stud finder to follow all the way up the stud wall to see if it is straight, however that would take a significant period of time. Another thought I had, which I have no idea of its true but in older homes I would be curious to know if the stud walls are still 16” on center or if standards were different.
