Boy, This Seems To Be The Month For Ticket Pricing Conversations

Butts In the Seats: You may have seen that the AMC movie chain decided to implement tiered pricing for their theaters with higher prices for preferred seating and lower pricing for less desirable front row seating and wheelchair spaces.

Every time I go to the movies now, it is a large sum of money for the experience. The $40 price tag for just two seats at AMC theatres near my house is one that burns a hole through your pocket real quick. And those pricings are just for seats, don’t even get me started on the candy and popcorn. I now try to find discounted movie theatre’s in my area, but knowing that AMC is now doing tiered seating makes me worried that many other movie theatres will start doing the same thing, and going to the movies will become so much more expensive than it already is. I love going and watching movies, so I am hopeful that the prices will drop at some point to create a more ethical price that allows people to actually enjoy going to the movies rather than worrying about the price. I also find this extremely unfair, as the higher prices now targets a certain type of audience that is able to pay that big price tag just to bring the family to the movies. Hopefully, in the future, the price will decline instead of increasing them.

There have been a number of conversations recently about ticket pricing in live entertainment and in things like the movie theater. I honestly haven’t been to a big chain movie theater in a while (they were way farther away from my house than the small business movie theater) - and I don’t really watch movies in movie theaters that often. It’s not super surprising that movie theaters are trying to raise their pricing, but it’s sad that they’re pricing out groups of people just to raise their profit margins. The candy is already like $10, movies were already really expensive, and this just makes it worse. It’s frustrating that the “best” experience at theaters like this is the most expensive. At this price point, I’d argue that it’s really not worth going to the movies anymore when for an average lower price, you can often stream the movies. We will see what happens with ticket pricing and movie attendance in the future.
