‘A Quick 5′ with Clare A’Hearn, Winner of the Cappies’ Maryland Theatre Guide Returning Critic Award for 2021

Maryland Theatre Guide: “The Cappies is a writing and awards program that trains high school theatre and journalism students to be expert writers, critical thinkers, and leaders. Student critics vie to be published in local media outlets by attending productions at other schools and writing critical reviews. At the end of the year, Cappies student critics decide who among their peer performers and technicians should be recognized for awards at the end of the season with glamour and excitement.”

As someone who was recognized three times as a technitian at the South Florida Annual Cappies Gala, I am very familiar with what the Cappies represents. I really relate to the student this article is describing because I also loved to partake in a variety of theatre departments in my high school. I appreciate how this article identifies that there are many students who participate in high school that do not continue to study it in college because it didn’t just represent a position or job, but a community. It is funny because I often run into people who find out I study theatre at the collegiate level and they explain they did theatre in high school so I is nice to know those communities and memories stay strong even after students graduate. Cappies as an organization is an amazing way for students to not only get the opportunity to write critiques about their fellow theatre programs, but also for students in those theatre programs to get constructive notes and really further their craft.
