www.broadwayworld.com: Moulin Rouge!
In a celebration of creativity and community, the Tony Award-winning Best Musical Moulin Rouge! The Musical has partnered with Groundswell, a New York based organization that brings together youth, artists, and community organizations to use art as a tool for social change. Moulin Rouge! The Musical is now playing at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre (302 West 45th St, NYC).

This is such a cool initiative and collaboration. Even though I have never had the chance to watch Moulin Rouge! The Musical, I have only heard good things, with particular emphasis on how seamlessly it brings together its four values of truth, beauty, freedom and love.
When I first heard of these values forming a crux of the show, I was so intrigued and happily delighted because these values to me personally hint towards a life of fun and satisfaction. Now having murals, signifying these values in one of the biggest cities of the world, where people from all walks of life interact with each other is just a commendable initiative. I think that it would be a great chance for artists in the city to work together and create art that would be there to stay, and only add to the success and love for Moulin Rouge! The Musical.
I'm a big fan of public art because it encourages everyone to interact with art--not just those who pay to see a show or enter a museum. This article was a bit all over the place so I couldn’t really tell what the murals specifically would cover (besides the "values" of Moulin Rouge), but I still think it's cool. It seems mostly like a promo for the show, which I get, but I hope it's fun and creative and doesn't feel so much like an ad. Everything else that i've heard about this show, especially online, doesn't give share a whole lot of specifics besides saying it's full of glitz and glam. I feel like this musical is more of a spectacle with famous songs that leave the audience feeling happy and excited. I will say I believe those shows have a place, especially on Broadway, and I don't frown upon their existence. Theatre can have so much variety and nuance and that's why we keep coming back.
I think this is such a cool idea! I loved the movie however I have not been lucky enough to see the musical. I liked that half the article was about the initiative and half the article was about the musical, in case people reading the article didn’t know much about the musical. However, I do wish the article had given more information about actual details about how to find out more about the mural, as the details were not very clear. The plans for how it worked seem quite fuzzy, especially with covid protocols. At first I thought they wanted people to get involved, as that's how it seemed from the heading, but the article then made it sound as though the murals were already completed. If they are already completed I would love to know what they look like or where to find pictures, as there were none included in the website. Overall, this sounds amazing, but the article didn’t seem to do a great job of describing it.
