350 GLP Moving Heads Light Up RTL Summer Games

LightSoundJournal.com: Banijay Productions Germany GmbH recently produced a special kind of live two-day sports show on behalf of RTL. LD Arkin Atacan from atacan design, who was responsible for the lighting and media design of the location, based this technically demanding production largely on fixtures from GLP. Around 350 moving heads from the German manufacturer were used for various lighting purposes.

Although I do find some of the more technical speak that I am not accustomed to kind of difficult to parse, I do find the technological progress interesting. Many of these fixtures are entirely new to me both in concept and design. Movers in general are still a new idea for me. I have never had the opportunity to work with any in the past as none of my old theatres could afford that kind of system. So being in a program where they are seen as the norm is incredibly exciting for me. Especially seeing articles such as this one in which such innovative fixtures are being used, I can only imagine how exciting the project must be for both the designers and the show runners. These lights are heavy duty and expensive, I am glad that they are clearly investing so much into the technical aspect of the Summer Games

I’ve personally been looking into lighting sports events. It’s cool to read about all the different types of platforms you have to light for. While it is a live event and there are live audiences you have to account for the filming and broadcasting of the event. I’ve been getting more involved with the football team at CMU and I am starting to see aspects of this while working with them. The lights at our home field are…. Awful. They make photos and videos look brown and washed out. I am looking forward to working on in event like this is the future. I am going to look into Tait Towers and PRG as I move into the industry but for now I will focus on my school work and football. I am also looking forward to being able to have access to some of this technology someday. I think that the best way to learn is just by being hands on and playing with the equipment. Funny story, for about 19 years of my life I spelled equipment with a t “equiptment” until Todd took off spelling points on some of my project last year
