The Arts Are Coming Back This Summer. Just Step Outside.

The New York Times: The path back for performing arts in America is winding through a parking lot in Los Angeles, a Formula 1 racetrack in Texas, and Shakespeare’s summer home in New York’s Central Park. As the coronavirus pandemic slowly loosens its grip, theaters, orchestras and opera companies across the country are heading outdoors, grabbing whatever space they can find as they desperately seek a way back to the stage.

I am really excited to see that it seems very likely that theater will be back over the summer, even if it is in a different format. I think outdoor theater is a great first step back in the right direction and might be able to serve as almost a practice run for when we are able to return indoors. It will be interesting to see how regulations start to change over the summer and if it makes it easier, and more financially productive, to produce shows this summer. I think one of the most challenging things for theater companies to be able to plan is that, like with the entirety of the past year, we do not know how things might be different in one month, and thus it is hard to plan ahead like is required for theatrical productions. I think the first time I go back to a live, in-person show will be absolutely spectacular, and I can not even imagine the energy that will be running through the audience.

This was a nice article that made me happy. During the pandemic, I have realized how amazing it is to be outside! Not only because of events and performing being pushed outside to stop the spread but being outside is just good for you in general. There are challenges that productions face when they move outdoors (duh weather, temperature, animals, etc) but bringing the performances outdoors completely changes the feeling of the shows and I am all for it! Pittsburgh weather has been amazing lately! I don't want that to change but I know it will, but I will enjoy it while I can :) I am looking into more ways to get outdoors (Vitamin D is good for you) so I am looking forward to looking into outdoor events this summer, and experiencing shows in a new way. It is really interesting to reflect and think about how the pandemic has shaped the world in such drastic ways. It has been tough (but even in a world without COVID life would still have its struggles and its problems) but collectively the world has had to shift together (I just like that things are shifting outside!)
