Stagehands Picket College Street Music Hall

New Haven Independent: The action took place offstage and on the street Monday, as a dozen stagehands stood in the cold in front of College Street Music Hall to assert that the concert venue is not willing to offer them the same benefits there as the Shubert Theatre does across the street.

I completely see where this group of stagehands is coming from. It relates back to the disparity in fairness in how reopening has happened. I keep seeing high school sports events happen almost business as usual, with wrestlers being allowed to fight without a mask and entre football teams being allowed to tackle each other. All meanwhile theater programs struggle to even get a small group of people on stage if any. This is not to say that we should open or close anything, but much like the stagehands, I want things to be treated with the same seriousness and thus same regulations or lack thereof. I also think it is about time they take measures for better health insurance. It can make the difference between life and death, and like the article mentioned it’s also about knowing it’s available if you need it. It should not be something tied to the availability of jobs.
