Cricut's New Subscription Fee Frustrates Cosplayers And Crafters

Cosplay Central: Last Friday, the home cutting plotter company named Cricut made big changes to their machines. Cricuts, which many cosplayers use to make designs that will then be scored or cut onto EVA foam, will now be limiting how many design uploads people can make on the machine unless they pay a monthly subscription fee.

Honestly this is disgusting. I already hate all those pay to play games that basically force you to spend unbelievable amounts of money just to have the best year, but having someone buy a machine upwards of $200 just to make them pay for a subscription that is, at the lowest, $100? Truthfully, I think that's highway robbery. Cosplayers are not billionaires they can't spend money so frivolously. Part of the wonder of cosplayers is that they are made out of simple materials, it makes people think that anyone can do it. Are used to have a Cricut for crafts as a kid, and it really is a useful machine, but that doesn't mean that the company has the right to add an additional price tag onto something that was already paid for. I really just hate capitalism. I can't believe the bare minimum is that a company actually cares about the consumer. Because every time a new company adds an extra price tag to whatever they're selling, it becomes more and more apparent that they don't care at all.

This article was really annoying. Just another way a big corporation becomes a monopoly at the abuse of the consumer. I always wanted a cricut but if they were to do this then I would definitely not buy. Luckily i went to the link for the petition and there was a statement from Cricut that said they wont be going through with this action. I was very very happy to hear that and am glad that the petition gained enough support that they could hear their voices. I just think its ridiculous that cricut would do this. Its obvious they've expended all their resources in making the products better and are just trying to milk as much money out of the cricut customers as possible. I believe that once a customer ha bought the machine they should get everything else with it, they should not have to have membership to use the device they bought.

Although I do understand everyone’s anger and frustration, I think that Circuit might be in the right here. From what I understand, to use this machine, you must be linked up to some sort of cloud that Circuit provides. This mean that this could has been operating at a loss for the past years. If they do this for much longer, they are going to go bankrupt. Although I definitely sympathise with these people’s frustrations, I don’t think their outrage is going to change the Circuit's business deduction. Circuit should have made people pay the subscription first anyway but I am assuming they just wanted to hook the customer before making them trying to pay more, which is not a very ethical business practice. Maybe if there is a way to use the machine exclusively online, you could just keep it offline so Cricut cannot brick your machine. Thank you
