Pittsburgh invests $800,000 in public art, seeks proposals for 18 projects

Visual Art | Pittsburgh | Pittsburgh City Paper: The pandemic has highlighted the importance of public art, as the format gives artists and patrons a way to show and view work in safer spaces that allow for social distancing. Now Pittsburgh will embark on an ambitious new initiative to fund and execute a number of public art projects across the city.

As somebody who’s moved around a bit, I’ve always found it interesting how much variation comes with how “artistic” a city is. When moving to Pittsburgh, I actually didn’t expect much. An “old steel town” didn’t feel like it would have much to offer artistically, and Pittsburgh itself was one of the cons when I was weighing options for colleges over a year ago. I was pleasantly surprised how “artistic” Pittsburgh turned out to be though, with a lot more local theatre, art galleries, etc. I’ve lived most of my life in LA, where street art is a booming culture. And while Pittsburgh doesn’t have nearly the level of “color” that Los Angeles does, it’s definitely not the most drab of the cities I’ve lived in. And the city devoting nearly a million dollars into public art is just a reflection that they DO care about artistic voices around the city. It’s interesting to me though that the thought of putting this money is charged by COVID…

I think that Pittsburgh is one of the most artistically rich cities I've seen in a while, which makes it a super interesting city to live in. I love the statues and murals all around. In Squirrel Hill they paint squirrels on the planters, and there are random mosaic stools in the middle of the street. It is so fun when cities make public art, and I would love to look into the artists that make them more often .Making public installation art like this genuinely might be one of the most interesting jobs, maybe I should look into that! Living in Orange County and visiting LA and New York often, there are obviously more artistic towns, but I think that Pittsburgh is making way to become a really great city. I am so excited to see what will happen with this grant and hopefully we will be able to see something new in our neck of the woods!
