LiveDesignOnline: Strictly FX lit up the skies of Washington DC for Joseph R. Biden's inauguration celebration on January 20, 2021. And it seems as if everyone is in agreement that the pyro show was a sensational way to close the evening's festivities, with pop star Katy Perry singing "Firework" as pyrotechnics exploded over our capital's monuments and the COVID-19 memorial.

I recently watched a documentary on Netflix about a pyrotechnic artist from China. I had never really considered the planning and artistry that these large firework shows require. Based on this article it seems as if COVID and the heightened security made planning the Inauguration fireworks even more complicated and difficult. While following a rather traumatic experience a few summers ago involving a piece of firework embedded into my eye I am not the biggest fan of seeing fireworks in person it was wonderful watching the show on my television screen. I think it is quite incredible that the show ran so smoothly and was coordinated so precisely. I think that often times pyrotechnics do not get as much credit and appreciation they deserve for creating beautiful performances in their own right or enhancing the performances of others. I feel as technology advances fireworks shows will just become more and more spectacular and I cannot wait to view them from a safe distance away.
I think fireworks shows in general are really amazing and are always one of the things I look forward to the most over the summer. I have always wondered what the logistics of these shows must be like, assuming that it had to be a great effort. It is really interesting to read about all of the logistics that were involved in creating the firework show for the Inauguration. I really enjoyed watching it, and thought it was so impressive how well coordinated everything seemed to be. Firework displays are definitely a really artistic thing even if they are not necessarily considered in the same sense as other live performances. It is interesting to get a glimpse into all the additional pressure surrounding this event because of COVID and the insurrection at the Capitol. I think overall the fireworks show was an excellent way to conclude the evening and it was executed extremely well.
I watched this show live and remember being so impressed the whole time to the point that they really made it seem like since nothing else can be happening in the world right now due to COVID, that they had to go all out on this firework show. There were so many fireworks that at times you really could not even see through the wall of explosives, which was pretty comical to me. I really think that Adam Briscow did an amazing job in coming up with something under very strict conditions due to COVID and due to the intense amount of security in the city on inauguration day. I thought it was really interesting when he spoke about the coordination of the delivery of the fireworks themselves and how to manage through all of the security checkpoints and everything necessary to get to where they needed to go. I also really enjoyed watching the drone show on election night that he designed as well. There are many innovative things happening in the midst of the pandemic and other issues that we face.
The election and the inauguration happened at a time like no other. Due to Covid-19, the United States is lacking the ability to come together, when we need it more than ever in the current divided and broken state. Biden's inauguration, however, despite the circumstances was able to put on a noble and honorable ceremony like no other. Their firework display was grandiose and encapsulated the vision the Biden administration aspired for their term. I really enjoyed how the article consisted of Q and As with Adam Biscow, the designer and producer of the fireworks show. It definitely made the article more trustworthy hearing the literal answers straight from Biscow. I also appreciated the information and safety precautions Biscow shared in terms of covid-19, and how they were able to stay safe throughout the production. There has been a severe lack of live performances due to the pandemic, so getting to see how one as important as the inauguration was able to accomplish this safely was a great way to learn.
I think the designers could have been a little more creative with their song choice, especially since it’s been over 11 years since “Firework” was released. Still, it was absolutely hilarious hearing Katy Perry sing it in such a dramatic arrangement, as if the song wasn’t remixed into oblivion and played everywhere for 2 years straight. I’m not sure if this song really fit the celebratory mood they were going for. Watching the video, I wish I could’ve been there in person to watch. The camera angles don’t seem to do the show justice, but then again, I assume fireworks are similar to theatre in that way. I don’t understand the mechanics of fireworks but it was really interesting reading about them. I regret not watching the show, because the pictures look beautiful. This got me thinking about just how much planning and safety has to go into transporting fireworks and other explosives. It’s got to be a very dangerous job.
I disagree with Chloe, i think the song choice for firework was perfect for a display of this scale. I really was blown away with all of the thought and planning that goes into producing a firework display of this size. Today is the super bowl and it was interesting to read that this pyrotechnic company, Strictly FX, also had experience with designing and producing the firework displays for 10 Super bowls and the Biden/Harris election night. One thing that really blew me away was that I was unaware that when I was seeing the Biden?harris victory fireworks, I was also seeing multiple drones fly in the sky that were programed to say different things, including Biden Harris 2020. I am really interested in learning more on how to design with drones and incorporate them into live performance. The scale of this firework display was one which I never saw before and the scale was able to capture how monumental that inauguration moment was and It sure will go down in history.
