David Crank (News of the World): Meet the Experts: Production Design

GoldDerby: David Crank was the production designer on “News of the World,” but he also had another gig: stand-in actor. Crank and cinematographer Dariusz Wolski spent about two months scouting locations in Santa Fe., N.M., for the Western and had to put their acting chops to the test. “He and I figured a lot of things out. We would film the script with our iPhones. There were four of us and we had to act out the script. We would send these little things [to director Paul Greengrass],” Crank tells Gold Derby at our Meet the Experts: Film Production Design panel (watch above). “I hope they never hit the light of day because I’m not a performer!”

This is a really interesting and incredible story to me. Reading about “News of the World” is just another example of how amazing film can truly be with such a huge budget and endless resources. I love their ability to turn one larger town into 3 separate towns to have on display for this movie. In reading more about the film in the article written, it is supposed to take place in multiple locations across the world, so the production team was tasked with the challenge of trying to achieve many worldly settings in one place which they chose in New Mexico. It was shot within 30 miles in Santa Fe which was supposed to reproduce 400 miles of land, which I find incredible. David Crank, the production designer on this movie, had to be extremely organized and had to have intense planning to make all of the locations around this small area of land look like various places around the world. This is genius and I love what they are able to come up with in film.
