Hurricane Dorian Cancels Pitbull, Chris Brown Concerts

www.ticketnews.com: Hurricane Dorian, the Category 5 storm which has already caused “extreme flooding” through the Bahamas, is headed toward the U.S. In light of the approaching storm, a handful of concerts have been cancelled including Chris Brown’s Florida gig and Pitbull’s California show.

Now, I understand this website is called “Ticket News,” but I feel the news that they are publicizing misses the mark. Hurricane Dorian, the category 5 hurricane obliterating the Bahamas and the Southeast corner of the United States, has caused immeasurable damage to the Bahamas already and continues to pummel the U.S. Countless homes have been destroyed. People have been injured, or even lost their lives as a result of Dorian. And TicketNews is letting the public know that two big-name artists have cancelled their concerts. Of course there are an abundance of news outlets that have been actively reporting on Dorian and its devastating effects to the Bahamas and the U.S., but this article by TicketNews seems to be almost insensitive and irrelevant to the people suffering through this catastrophic natural disaster. Granted, this is exactly the type of news that TicketNews reports on, their title says it all, but I also believe this is a perfect example of the classes saying: “too soon.”

Boo hoo, they had to cancel their concerts. TicketNews is missing the important piece of hurricane Dorian. There’s like 2 sentences on the magnitude of this storm. It nearly destroyed the Bahamas, but we’re worried about cancelled concerts. However, I do understand that this website is strictly focused on ticketing news, which is fine, but I just think that they could have done a better job spreading awareness about how bad this hurricane actually was for the people of the Bahamas and Southern US. The artists most likely informed their audience that the concert would be cancelled anyways. This article seems unnecessary to me. They could have waited to report this information, or frankly not have reported on it at all. Sometimes it’s important to realize what actually matters, rather than reporting on what the website typically reports on. TicketNews dropped the ball on this one. This could have been done differently.

It is very frightening when a hurricane comes around. I have never experienced being anywhere close to a hurricane but if I was to be near one I would try to escape as quickly as possible. I am sure there are some people in Florida annoyed that their tickets to Chris Brown's concert had to be canceled, especially since there is no rescheduled performance. I am sure the people who were to attend Pitbulls concert were even more annoyed being that the hurricane doesn't have much of an effect on them. However, it is very important to view these musical artists in more depth than celebrities. These people are just people who have families of their own to care for and their own safety to prioritize. I only know people are already criticizing these artists on canceling and rescheduling their concerts but I hope most of them realize the reason why they had to do so.

Being from Florida, I understand the urge to treat a hurricane as an annoyance rather than an emergency. I've been in multiple hurricanes in my years, and no Floridian has ever really cared too much. But I think as human beings capable of empathy, we need to stop being so nonchalant about natural disasters and check out privilege. First of all, these frequent natural disasters mean we're destroying the Earth, so there's that. But also, the Bahamas have been devastated by Hurricane Dorian and we act like it doesn't even matter! These poor people are having their homes and livelihood destroyed and we turn a blind eye. Yes, it sucks to have your concert cancelled, and you're allowed to be annoyed by that! But try to put this in perspective: you're alive. Some people aren't. All in all, this is tough for Pitbull and his fans, Chris Brown and his deserved it.
