This is so extremely cool! We have been learning about IATSE in Production Personnel Management recently. It's very exciting to see all of our discussions in reality. West Coast IATSE is very fascinating to me because I know very little about TV and Film timelines so reading this article, I had a hard time understanding the distinctions between the types of shows. It sounds like the contract ratification was a tough one this year. The items up for negotiation were definitely hard fought battles. One of the most important parts of the negotiation, from my read, was the increase in contribution to health and pension in correspondence to views on streaming services. I was excited to see that IATSE is being very forward thinking in relation to streaming services. It seemed like AEA had a hard time responding to the ever-changing presence of media. Additionally, I thought the formal message addressed to the union was really poignant and went into a good amount of detail to give explanations to members without having to read contract addendum word for word.
I think it’s important in these changing times in the industry to reevaluate our standards and change our policies accordingly. It’s reassuring to see that these conversations are happening among the higher ups of important organizations, and it feels good to know that an organization I may one day be a part of cares about its members.
Though I don’t exactly understand how unions work, I understand the importance of their presence in our industry and am trying to learn more about them as they become more and more relevant to my life and my future career. This article was a good way to stay up to date on what’s going on right now with IATSE and the primary source they included was especially helpful in understanding what these changes entailed.
I’m leaving this article curious about other unions and their policies and principles and will probably end up doing some further research.
