On the Town

Pittsburgh in the Round: America’s musical legacy is celebrated in an effervescent On the Town, bubbling over in honor of the centenary of composer Leonard Bernstein and the opening of the sixth season for Resonance Works. It’s a joyful tribute to New York, New York, and those military service members–in this story, sailors!–who get only a few precious hours …

It was a pleasure to work on On The Town with this cast. This was an interesting show to do as a concert version because it is often done with a lot of dancing and has 2 ballet numbers in the show. That being said, the concert versions is arranged such that the dancing can be done more minimally than in the regular version. Yet, Yvonne Hudson seemed to enjoy the dancing in the show. Another difference between the concert version and the regular version, is the use of a narrator. The narrator helps direct the plot and helps the audience understand how the cut numbers fit in the show. I agree with Hudson in that the singers and orchestra were amazing. It was wonderful to hear the music every night and it the music really did drive the show. I greatly enjoyed working with Maria Sellner and the rest of the cast on the concert version of On the Town.
