On Golden Pond

Pittsburgh in the Round: There is a particular fondness in my heart for hearing someone bellow at a person for being “an old poop.” A term of endearment rather than of malice or mockery, the chirping out of “you old poop” became synonymous with the surprise 1981 hit film On Golden Pond (the phrase, for context, was uttered over and over by a gracefully aging Katherine Hepburn).

This short and sweet review was one I was drawn to because I had recently seen this production at one of the local theatres back home. It’s a timeless story about familial relations, and how they change with time. My parents were fond of the film, but I went to see this show with my sister. Though only a few years younger, she agreed more with the actions of some characters that I did not. This caused me to think about our place in the family, and how growing up as a middle child versus the youngest in the same household could be drastically different. Because this play is from a different time, both the production I saw, and the one in Pittsburgh in the Round, had to consider some of the micro aggressive lines in the text that yield controversy. I appreciate that both theatres payed close attention to this aspect, but I wish the article more explicitly explained how the cast, crew, and creative team overcame this issue.
