Stage Directions: It’s not every day that the chance comes up to light a large-scale musical spectacular starring over 100 majestic Friesian horses, geese, a dog, a falcon… together a few famous actors and singers as well, so Lighting Designer, Marc Heinz relished the opportunity of working on De Stormruiter (The Stormrider) with a cast that truly ticked the ‘diverse’ box in every aspect.

The photos of this production are incredible. I can’t believe how many details the production team managed to incorporate into this show. There is certainly room for every aspect of theatrical design on this stage (arena). I am particularly drawn to the lighting design in this, especially since I have experience handling horses and I know how sensitive they can be to bright lights. The article says the lights had to be especially bright to prevent them from being washed out by the sand on the ground, but also safe enough to not irritate the eyes of the dozens of horses used in the production. This sounds like a huge challenge, and the designer executed the lighting nonetheless. The quality of it combined with the vibe given off by the costumes and set creates a dream-like mood of mysticism. Even the shadows of the actors and horses are captured wonderfully. It truly seems magical, and I absolutely love it.
