Be Noisy: A Report from the 4th Women in Entertainment Summit
Far Flungers | Roger Ebert: Make noise, make coffee, make gift baskets and make your own script. That's just some of the advice given by the women at the fourth annual Women in Entertainment (WIE) Summit at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles this past Thursday.

Taking issue with the article itself, rather than it's subject, I have to note that this article is somewhat unclear at times and seems to lack a cohesive progression of ideas. That being said, the writing is not really the point. There are definitely some good points in here, especially about negotiating and dealing with "hepeating," when a man repeats an idea that a woman has just said and takes credit. However, a lot of the advice and topics covered in this article are not very applicable to the average theatre professional. Being generous in negotiations is a lovely idea, but most people do not hold power in negotiations, and that advice really only applies to those who work for production companies and are negotiating from a place of power. Likewise, the advice to "be noisy" without being confrontational (with examples that would be taken as passive aggressive if not confrontational in most contexts) is often impossible for many women who might fear for their jobs or their career opportunities if they voice dissent with those in power. These are great ideas, but they need more development to be applied to the majority of women in the industry. It is not enough.
