An Award Night in Two Acts

Make-Up Artist Magazine: The New Zealand Body Art Showcase and Awards for 2018 celebrated a sold out 10th Anniversary show at Auckland’s Q Theatre’s Rangatira on Sept. 1. At the New Zealand Body Art Showcase and Awards the focus is on the performance as well as the artistry.

I really enjoy the art of body painting which is why I clicked on this article in the first place. I think body painting and this specific competition give a perfect mix of performing and visual arts. The models are actors and dancers and need to sell the piece just as well as the artist needs to paint the piece. This competition seems particularly interesting because they are telling a story with the art and a story that has meaning and makes the viewers think, which is my favorite kind of body painting. I think using body painting to tell such stories and express such messages is extremely powerful because it is not just a flat canvas there is so much that can be done using the concepts of people and how people relate to the stories and issues being expressed. The expressions and movements of the model help that much more to convey the desired story and message which is definitely something that cannot be expressed on a flat canvas to the same extent. I continue to be impressed by the world of body painting every time I see an article about it or watch a video about it. I think more people should be exposed to this emerging art form and I cannot want to see where the world of body painting goes in the future.

I would have loved to go to this award show. It sounds like a truly entertaining and beautiful show. It was interesting to learn about the preparation that goes into a show like this. I think it was a cool idea to hav the judging done at the dress rehearsal and not the actual show. I am sure that gave the artists and the models the ability to go onstage without the pressure of being judged and display the art comfortably. I would like to learn more about the different categories and how the artists get seperated into each. I also think it would be really cool to stage or event manage an event like this. I would imagine there are a lot of things that are special to the body painting industry that a manager would have to keep in mind while anticipating the needs of the event and possible solutions.
