Maker Spotlight: Jessica Koe

makezine.com: Specifically regarding sewing electronics into dancewear/clothing, I got started when a professor came into the office with a box of electronic components specifically designed to be sewn onto cloth. He was showing my professor/boss (who also loves sewing and crafting) how the parts could be connected onto metal snaps to then be snapped on/off clothing for washing or general reuse, and the capabilities of different electronics.

What a cute little article. I thought this was really cute. I LOVED Jessica’s ballet light up shoes! What an awesome craft this girl has. The skill and time this student had taken to work on something she is passionate about is really inspiring. When I read that this girl who is studying coding considers herself a crafer and a dancer before she considers herself a coder. It’s weird to think that students choose to study something in college that isn’t something that they prioritize as their main passion. I remember being in costume stagecraft and Sophie showed our group a dress she made alongside people who code. The lights inside the dress would light up when the person's’ heart would beat. The connection of electronics within costumes is a type of collaboration I wish was more encouraged by Carnegie Mellon University. Collaboration between disciplines is something I am passionate about.

It’s really intersting to see how this maker has combined her interests of crafting, dance and electronics. When I was first reading this article, I immediately thought she was going to add electronics to her jewelry, and I was really intrigued as to why she would put them on pointe shoes. But it’s really cool that they would light up when the dancer goes on pointe- and on pointe correctly. It would be an interesting training tool for new ballet dancers to know when they have successfully gone on pointe if they are practicing without the ballet instructor. And it would be really interesting to see it happen in a dance as the lights are directly controlled by the movements of the dancers. There are a lot of interesting things that could come out of these creations. I would be really interested to see what she does with the tutu because I think she would make some really beautiful patterns that would hide the lights until they wanted to be seen.

I agree with Unknown: this is such a cute little article! I love that her makerspace is “My desk.” Me too. Its great to hear about how Jessica is able to combine her talents in coding and crafting and dancing to make art! I also loved the idea of her light up pointe shoes. It was also cool that she mentioned the electronics don’t add any weight or bulk to the shoe: I’m not a dancer, and wouldn’t have thought about how that would impact the dancing, but after she brought it up, I completely understand how that has to be considered. This really inspires me to put together some of my talents to create art! I’m taking an electrical engineering course currently, and I’m learning to create basic circuits. LED circuits are something I could definitely put into some of my projects in Basic Design or another class! I’m so glad to have stumbled across her work!
