How John Legend, Sara Bareilles and Co-Stars See ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ Roles

The New York Times: John Legend hasn’t done musical theater since high school. But when NBC called to ask if he might be interested in playing the title role in a live broadcast of “Jesus Christ Superstar,” he said, “I had a hard time turning down the role of Jesus Christ.”

Now Mr. Legend, best known as an R&B singer and songwriter, is channeling his inner rocker as he leads a starry cast of the latest televised musical.

This was a nice article to read after only seeing bits and pieces of the live "Jesus Christ Superstar" live on NBC on Sunday. While catching clips of the show that some of my classmates were watching, I did notice that many of the design aspects seem to have been well thought out. The lighting design in particular caught my eye, as light were used in a very constructional way in playing with the scaffolded set pieces. In general "Jesus Christ Superstar" and other concert like musicals are not at all my thing. They do not relate closely with the kind of theatre that I connect with or really like, and when you put a production like that on television, you are asking for an even more commercialized version of the musical. While I do not agree with the choice to put theatre productions on commercialized TV, I am glad that theatre is becoming more accessible in a way, and hope to see how this live TV musical fad plays out.

Sadly, I did not get to see this yet but I have seen pictures and some clips from this. First off the fact they did it in an armory in Brooklyn is super cool. I love when these live shows film near where I live! One thing I did not know was that John Legend was a theater kid on high school. I wish there are videos of him in fiddler on the roof as a high schooler. One great thing about this is that almost everyone has experience with musical theater before this. A lot of the prior live shows had celebrities who have never done theater before. This is extremely important as they need to know what it is like to put on a play and do story telling. This is a very different thing than doing tv and flim. Hopefully I will watch this soon as it seems very well done.
