‘Black Panther’ star Danai Gurira slays screen and stage; her latest play opens soon at Seattle
The Seattle Times: Long before her breakout role as the sword-wielding Michonne in “The Walking Dead” or her powerful portrayal of Okoye, the fierce protector of Wakanda, in the blockbuster “Black Panther,” actor Danai Gurira’s work as a playwright was celebrated for bringing nuanced, complex stories to the stage that had not been told before.

I've always been a huge fan of Danai Gurira ever since I saw her debut on "The Walking Dead" as a mysterious sword wielding zombie apocalypse survivor. That is why it is so interesting to me to see some of her background before she got famous! Its always cool to see what kind of work these amazing actors and actresses do on stage, since it really drives home the close proximity of theater to Blockbuster movie making. I especially loved Danai's recent performance in Black Panther as Okoye. In both the roles I have seen her in, her performance has deftly combined ferocious intensity with a tempered sensitivity, which combines to make her an incredibly intimidating yet sympathetic heroine. As noted in the article, her skills as an actress are far deeper and more nuanced than simply mowing down zombies, and I can't wait to see where she goes next.
The first time I saw this actress was in Black Panther and I thought she was absolutely incredible. I do not watch The Walking Dead so I am not sure what her role is there, but I was so interested to learn about how she got famous and what she is doing outside of film and television. I love that the movie has opened up a lot of dialogues and made way for diversity conversations and opportunities for more stories to be told. I was also glad to see a mention of the play Eclipsed, which is one of the plays being done as part of collaboration projects this year. I am glad that these stories are being discussed and talked about and people are gaining awareness about the different diverse stories and perspectives. I think she is a wonderful actress and I am really interested as to what she will be doing in the future.
