Big Gender Pay Parity Gap at U.S. Entertainment Companies in U.K.

Variety: Last week, all companies in the U.K. with more than 250 employees had to report their gender pay gaps — not by choice but under a new law backed by Prime Minister Theresa May. May has called the pay gap a “burning injustice” that she is determined to eliminate within a generation.

Why is the United Kingdom the only country currently doing this? Is it because there is a female in a position of power? Is it because all other countries lack the power to make this happen? Is it because our government is afraid of corporations that are so large and very obviously have a gender disparity? Is it because the United States is afraid of revealing that a gender gap exists? It’s already been proven to exist, so why not just say how big the gap is? Why not just show that women are treated unfairly? By not admitting these things, men are simply making it even more unfair and offering women less and less opportunity to find equality. It’s the twenty-first century, something needs to happen, men need to stop giving only men the opportunity to make a decent wage. And people in power need to put women in power, you can't just say that women need to step up, because that is inherently wrong if the playing field isn't even.

I think it is so good that something like this is finally happening, and I hate that it is not happening in the United States, but hopefully, by seeing these changes in the U.K. we will soon follow suit. It is very interesting to me that this is happening under Theresa May, which just goes to show what power women have when they are in leadership positions and have the power to make meaningful change. From this article, I also thought it was very interesting that companies are attributing their “uncomfortable” pay gaps to the lack of women in leadership positions- which just raises another issue of why there are no women in executive positions and “How did you allow this situation to persist in the 21st century and not take measures to promote women into leadership roles?” The fact that companies are trying to fix the pay gap is truly incredible- even if it is mainly to save their reputations and company branding.
