Stage Right starts new tradition with 'Night of the Living Dead — The Musical'

TribLIVE: It wouldn't be Halloween season without Stage Right's annual “Rocky Horror Show” – unless the Greensburg theater company produces an all-new, original, zombie-laden musical based on the George Romero 1968 cult classic film, “Night of the Living Dead.”

Tony Marino, artistic director for Stage Right, took a temporary setback and turned it into a new musical which will premiere Oct. 20-21 at The Lamp Theatre in Irwin and Oct. 27-28 at Greensburg Garden & Civic Center.

This is such a fun idea! Rocky Horror is such a classic, but the thought of creating a zombie horror musical seems so out of the box and unusual. I'm not sure how it will go - very good or very bad - but I love the creativity that was put into the piece. I'm curious as to how the zombie makeup holds up, though. This isn't a chilly, dimly lit amusement attraction. The actors will be dancing and sweating and under hot stage lights for the duration of the show, and the zombie makeup and prosthetics will have to hold up to not only the performance stress but also have the ability to convey emotion and reactions for the actors. All in all, though, this sounds super fun and I hope I can go see it this Halloween season!

The Rocky Horror Picture Show late night events are some of my favorite pastimes and best memories. I’ve been attending Rocky showings for probably close to two years now, and I can’t imagine not having something like that around anymore. This company really bounced back after finding out the rights were unavailable (however, I am excited for the Rocky tour and will definitely be attending a date if one comes to Pittsburgh!). The concept for this show sounds interesting. I have never seen Night of the Living Dead, but from the description given in the article, it sounds like a very unique show. Using the news casting theme to provide “musical moments” from a movie that doesn’t have any music in it takes a lot of twisting and creativity. I hope this show provides a similar atmosphere as Rocky—people dressed up in crazy outfits, yelling and throwing props at the stage—and I hope it gains a decent following in the area. The late night theater scene could expand fairly quickly and generate popularity around the country if this show goes well and inspires other companies to create similar works!
