The Russian Broadway Community Responds to Russian Anti-Gay Propoganda Law

fbomb: Anybody who has been paying even a modicum of attention to the 2014 Winter Olympics knows about the outrage caused by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to sign into law an act prohibiting the promotion of nontraditional sexual relationships to minors. The law isn’t only disappointing from a basic human rights perspective, but specifically worrisome for gay Olympians, who fear they may face discrimination or even arrest while participating in the games. Activists all over the world have made their feelings about this situation known — from American LGBTQ groups to Sweden to, now, even the Broadway community.

First off, It is truly a shame that Russia decided to establish a repressive law based on fear and ignorance. Second, Why can't the Olympics focus on just sporting events instead of pushing political agendas? Finally, I'm glad Broadway was able to artistically craft an elegant middle finger at such hypocritical government.

This was a great way to address such a terrible law. I think it is often a good idea to bring up difficult topics in the light of comedy. I found the piece really amusing and it was fun to see so many Broadway stars join together in solidarity against a cause they care about. Though I doubt it will make any difference in the Russian jurisdiction, it was an entertaining piece that I'm sure many people will see, hopefully making them see just how ridiculous the law is.
