The Tartan Online: Last year, about 100 Carnegie Mellon faculty sat down to decide what Carnegie Mellon does best. The list was narrowed down to eight discreet categories that have become the eight concentrations available in the Integrative Design, Arts, and Technology Network (IDeATe) program.
In this program, students from any academic background can choose from one of eight interdisciplinary concentrations, which include: animation and special effects, entrepreneurship for creative industries, game design, intelligent environment, learning media, media design, physical computing, and sound design.

Sounds like a cool innovative concept. For students who are from disciplinary backgrounds this program allows them to spread their horizons into interdisciplinary work. I found the eight new courses to be innovative and useful to this period of time. When I saw that this new program was offering media design, sound design, and learning media it made me think of the school of drama where we already have that stuff. I wonder how their program is going to be different and what we could potentially gain from them to include in your program? The Technology Network Program is available to all students who have time to spend on a concentration. CMU is serious about this program and they want to make it make it a hit. I believe many students at CMU are going to love this new program and it will be a huge hit.
This is the reason I came to CMU. It was the only place where it felt like I could be a theatre person, and be a tech person as well. However, recently, that plan has been coming up short. I've realized people mostly in the other concentrations have no interest in making difficult cross-discipline attempts work. Until now apparently. Although none of the 8 specified programs is particularly what I want to do, I see great development here in the interdisciplinary programs, and I hope it continues, because THAT I think is what makes CU one of the best universities in the world
I heard about this program a couple of months ago. I'm really excited that these ideas of cross-departmental teaching and experimentation are being molded into a fully-realized curriculum. I am actually very interested in pursuing the "intelligent environments" minor. I have always loved spaces and environments that incorporate 21st century interaction. I think "smart" spaces are the future in so many areas of design. After school I would love to work for Disney Imagineering, so I think this program will help me realize my dreams of entertainment design and how to make the amusement park experience better and more exciting than ever before. I am excited to look more into this program!
This is a great initiative, and yet another proof that the combination of technology and art is the direction that many disciplines are and should be moving towards. Too often people think that the arts and technology are two very different departments that might not have much in common, but I think that both areas benefit immensely from exposure to and collaboration with the other. This program is a wonderful opportunity for the many CMU students whose aspirations do not easily fit in a box, and will allow those people to explore and develop fascinating projects and inquiries.
Interdisciplinary is my jam! I've always found it hard to stick to just one small area, because I enjoy finding connections between otherwise separate areas. Before reading this I hadn't heard about this IDeATe thing at all. I'm in the media department so I find this odd. I can definitely see my self trying to take some of these classes in the new few years. The article says that all the schools were involved in coming up with the classes. I wound be interested to find out how the school of drama was involved in the process and how the school of drama will be involved in IDeATe in the future. I know that we in theatre often take tech from other area's and adopt it for our own needs. This could be a great way for us to do that right here at CMU. I'm really looking forward to looking in to this program more.
I think CMU has been getting a lot of complaints form students about how difficult it is to be at this school and be interdisciplinary even though they advertise it when you are looking at universities. I think this is a great step forward and a great relief for people who have been struggling to make something like this work. Im sure it will come with its own struggles but it great to see progress like this. Makes students feel like their voices are being heard and they do get to have a greater hand int heir education. Im excited to see what something like this brings to the dynamic here.

The seems like a really great program and first step towards having a truly integrated art, design and technology program. At the present or at least when i interviewed, CMU was not that enthusiastic about cross disciplinary students. I hope that this program helps pave the way for students that want to really master both of area for the betterment of both being able to achieve their goal.
I think these new majors are awesome! I love that CMU is putting so much effort into this. Besides the fact that I love the drama program here, one of my biggest attractions to this school, was the intense and deeply rooted connections between arts and technology. As someone who want to work for WDI, I want this idea and connection to define my career. I want to be able to bring the creative and technological together and create amazing things. I also would be really interested to see a more expansive description of these majors, especially the one involving special effects, as that has always been an interest of mine.
One of the things that I love about CMU is that it is always pushing the envelope within each of its programs. What is interesting is that it allows for a ton of opportunity collaboration across the whole university. However, the challenge with collaboration from different programs is that each program has their own unique work ethic. This can sometimes create problems in communication, and in execution of projects. It will be interesting to see where things go in the future.
