Opera Gets Sexy: Brokeback Mountain Opera Dress Rehearsal Photos

Out Magazine: When we spoke to composer Charles Wuorinen about his Brokeback Mountain opera before rehearsals began at Madrid's Teatro Real, he said he was surprised by how rapidly social attitudes toward gay men loving and marrying had changed since he began the project, and he openly wondered how people would respond to the Brokeback Mountain opera’s tragic story.

Seems as though Wuorinen definitely broke the "old fashioned" boring opera habit. I personally don't know how I feel about this movie being turned into an opera. It would be an interesting sight to see. Especially performed in spanish.

Brokeback Mountain the movie came out on December 5th 2005 and is now nine years later being turned into an opera in Spain. I wonder if the European audience would respond differently than if the opera was going to be performed in the states. I love the concept, but its either going to be a hit or complete fail. The show from the pictures only has two characters and they better be extremely strong performers to capture the audiences attention for a sold two hours. The set and costumes seem minimalist, which isn't typical of an opera, but I bet the team did a fantastic job. I would love to see this show at some point, but I would have to travel to Spain.

Okay so I JUST posted staying basically that just because a movie is popular does not it should be made into a staged production. I honestly cannot imagine this being a really good production. I think it is funny that one would be worried the show was too old fashioned, but I understand where the worrying is coming from. At the same time this Opera has good timing. On the opposite end of the continent Russia is dealing with all the crap it deserves for outlawing homosexuality. So I think the director is right not to worry.
