Having Gone Largely Unnoticed In The 'Game Of Thrones' Series, It's Now Impossible To Take Your Eyes Off It

Smatterist: You’re probably a big fan of Game of Thrones and you may have even watched the series at least a dozen times in anticipation of the new season. But through all those viewings, did you ever notice the attention to detail that goes into the show? For example, the costumes. Have you ever really looked at the intricate designs on all of them? You probably haven’t, but after seeing these, you won’t be able to ignore them.

Wow. The embroidery is mindboggling. I have seen the first two seasons of Game of Thrones, but have yet to begin viewing the third. Michele Clapton’s costumes are outstanding when immersed in action, however the eye candy photos of Michele Carragher’s embroidery are truly a treat. Attention to detail such as this can go miles to put actors in character and enhance the overall tone of a production. As outlined in the captions, the embroidery designs are brilliantly inspired not just by the characters, but also by the narrative of the story. Sansa’s wedding dress is a beautiful example of this, showing the communing of her mother (Tully fish) and father (Stark Direwolf), with the Lannister Lion ultimately overtaking the Direwolf. Difficult for me to choose a favorite, but the insects are particularly amazing. The costumes are an excellent excuse for re-watching the entire series!

Be sure to check out the “How I Create an Embroidery” section of Michele’s website:

These are so beautiful! I've never watched Game of Thrones, but this article made me want to, just to look at the costumes. I'm sad that in all of the pictures from the actual show, it looks like you can barely see any of the intricate embroidery. I wanted to yell at all of the characters to pull their hair back because it was in the way! I'm sure the costumes help the actors get into character and everything, but it seems so terrible that such beautiful art is largely ignored.

The absolutely incredible amount of detail shown here is breathtaking. It is baffling to think that so much care and attention were poured into the thought and creation of these dresses, and to think that each piece tells its own story is rather amazing. I think that having a costume that symbolizes so much not only helps progress the story and tell it in a unique way, but also must be an incredible resource for the actor or actress wearing it as it must help them to pull from the garment that they are wearing for inspiration and emotion.

I found the introduction paragraph of this article a little condescending. I know that's not really important, and I don't think it was the writer's intent, I think it was just meant to say "hey this will probably surprise you!" but the way it came off was sort of accusatory. As though the audience was responsible for not noticing the intricacy of the costumes. But that type of detail is not something people really even have the option to really notice on television.
That said, this these are absolutely incredible. I don't watch the show, but these pictures do make more interested in it, although watching the show wouldn't allow you to enjoy the costumes at the same level as from these pictures. The insects are one of the coolest things I've ever seen affixed to clothing.

It's crazy to think that so much attention is being paid to such small details. Some of these dresses are only on screen for a few minutes in poorly lit rooms (they live without electricity and all), but they are still put together as though they are meant to be examined with a magnifying glass. That kind of care and attention is a beautiful example of how much technicians and artists in the performing arts industry work to create pieces of art that are very intricate, regardless of whether or not any audience member will actually notice.
This is also great publicity for GOT (as if they needed it..), because I've seen this article several times on Facebook and various websites.
