UK theatres 'at risk' revealed

The Stage: Seventeen venues across the UK have been added to the Theatre Buildings at Risk Register, including the Theatre Royal Margate, Darlington Arts Centre and the Warehouse Theatre in Croydon. The register, which is published annually by the Theatres Trust, aims to highlight theatres across the UK at a “real risk of being lost”. Despite the new additions, the overall number of buildings on the list has reduced from 56 to 49 in the last year, with a number of high-profile venues removed from the register.

It is quite alarming to see the rate at which the UK is losing theatre. Theatres are such a big part of society whether its by providing just entertainment or by commenting on social problems, such as Boal-type productions. The idea of this deterioration of theatre is appalling because with the loss of theatre comes the loss of culture. Theatre has been around for thousands of years and was one of the first establishments that brought social criticism to life. There is evidence of people trying to keep theatre alive as stated in the passage when the new theatres were brought up. But if we are to keep the art of theatre alive, there will need to more people and more help. Theatre is a great part of human history and should be preserved as to also preserve the idea of social commentary. Society could fall without such an establishment because of the lack of questioning the ideas. I'm not saying society will fall without theatre, but it would fall without the ideas that theatre has installed.
