‘Next to Normal’ cast savors meaty roles, storytelling

TribLIVE: For Justin Fortunato, there are no easy musicals. "I lean to shows that are not necessarily about glitz, glamour and traditional musical theater," Fortunato says. "I like things that will challenge me."

It is lovely to see that "Next to Normal" is so popular, and prevalent the theatrical world. This article rings true with so many in many ways, but one fact is positively alarming. The leads in a production of "Next to Normal" have not seen it performed before. The ability to look at a book, get to know a character, and have individual ideas about it is a wonderfully rare opportunity. Today, so many performers have seen the shows they will themselves perform that productions seem to fade together and are not creatively original. The production of "Next to Normal," an iconic and impacting show is not one easily forgotten, and can easily become redundant between casts and the lack of unique ideas. Carnivale Theatrics' production seems to have potential to amaze as some of its main players have not seen the show and have the opportunity for development and change of their seriously bizarre characters that are so well known to "NTN" fans.
