Louis CK Keeps Experimenting: Now Bringing The Direct-To-Fan Approach To Ticket Sales

Techdirt: We've written a lot about Louis CK since the huge success of his direct-to-fan sales strategy for the video from his last tour, and he continues to be one of the best examples of how being open, human and awesome is an important part of success these days. Now, while other comedians are following in those footsteps, he's continuing to innovate: yesterday he announced that tickets for his new tour will be sold direct to fans, exclusively through his website, just like the videos. There are all sorts of benefits for fans, and all sorts of detriments for scalpers (his two core motivations)

The best part about CK's strategy is how open the whole things is. Everything these days is controlled by a faceless corporation, or so it seems. Louis CK's forwardness about his sales methods feels down to earth and reassuring, and it avoids the annoyance of subscribing to companies like TicketMaster and etc. CK is genuinely trying to avoid scalpers and hiked up ticket prices. The fact that he is losing money and still going through with it is extremely commendable.

The direct-to-fans method of ticket sales is an option of which it seems not enough people are taking advantage. As seen from Louis CK's very successful use of it, this approach certainly does have its benefits -- it opens his work up to a much wider audience and will maybe help him to gain even more popularity than he already has. Obviously not everyone has the funds to do this, but nevertheless, it's nice to have some more substantial evidence that there are in fact people out there who do shows for more reasons than to simply make money. They do shows for the sake of doing shows, for the sake of making their work available to those who like and want it, which in an ideal world would be what it's really all about.
