SAG and AFTRA open up about merger plans
latimes.com: Hollywood's actors' unions are opening up about their proposed marriage agreement. The Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists on Tuesday posted details of a merger package overwhelmingly approved by their respective boards last weekend.

This merger seems like a great compromise. I can imagine that people who currently hold cards for both unions will vote to approve the merger. The merger would mean they'd have less dues to pay and probably less paperwork to deal with. At this point I would really be surprised if the voting members of these unions did not approve of the merger. It will likely open up new opportunities for some members and allow for the ease of contract negotiations for those who work in jobs that fall under both of the unions's purviews. I am glad to hear that the officer election policies of both unions are being used. This is respectful and thoughtful, as it validates and honors the systems that are already working well in the individual unions. It seems only logical to me that the members of the two unions should be represented by one major union, as their jobs are so similar and closely-knit.
