Campus seeks solutions to Pittsburgh transit troubles

The Tartan Online: Around 60 members of the university community met last Tuesday afternoon to discuss Carnegie Mellon’s options amid a state funding crisis that has the Port Authority of Allegheny County proposing a cut of 35 percent of its bus and light rail service.

These bus cuts are ridiculous. And I'm not only thinking about college students. We live in a city, where there are areas that it is feasible that people would not have cars of their own accord. I am originally from Boston, and I certainly know people who relied only on public transportation from there. Not even to mention the students, most of whom only relied on public transportation. It is good to see CMU taking action against this, although I highly doubt they will be able to do anything near what the city buses do. It just won't be possible.

I think we can all agree that the bus cuts suck, and will make many things (especially airport transit) way harder and more expensive. If it's a big enough effect, housing prices in some areas might change, too.
I'm pretty confident that CMU will provide enough transportation to the airport during spring break, when school starts and ends, etc. However, I really hope they include an option for people that need to fly out on unorthodox dates. Like me, tomorrow. Luckily the 28x hasn't been cut yet.
I think the best point this article made was that CMU is going to largely wait, see what direction everything takes, and then formulate a more specific plan.

Everyone always complains about how bad the buses are here. I wonder what they will think when the buses are cut even more. Compared to where I'm from the buses here are great, they are frequent and nice, and they go to more sections of the city. Back home a ton of our public transportation budget was cut and it now means that we have shitty buses that don't run as much as they need too. But now less people ride the bus because it is just not enough support to get where you need to go. The buses in Pittsburgh are a dream, except for the whole showing your pass when you exit the bus (I hate that). But besides that I had no qualms. But it looks as though there is not much that the university can do, so I guess we will just suck it up and try to supplement?
