Joshua Bergasse, Choreographer for NBC’s ‘Smash’
NYTimes.com: ON the Staten Island set of NBC’s new musical drama “Smash” it was easy to miss the choreographer Joshua Bergasse amid the hubbub in the St. George Theater. Onstage one of the show’s ingénues, Megan Hilty, rehearsed a chorus girl dance number behind the Broadway star Norbert Leo Butz. In the audience the show’s creator, Theresa Rebeck, chatted with the songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.

Stories like these, where someone is struggling then makes his (or her) big break, if you will, are always so good at connecting with people. It gives them hope, and what is great about Josh Bergasse's story is that it follows very closely with the themes in SMASH (which was very good despite a few inaccuracies). In particular the character of Ivy who has been in he chorus working hard and just can't seem to make it to the top relates well since the article mentions how Josh had been struggling and had not quite made it to the pinnacle point as a musical theatre choreographer.
I also appreciated his nod towards the time that goes into the show and how he is still refining his time management skills as he has to adapt to the new show.
I am so excited for this show. I just watched the pilot on Netflix and it was awesome. Even though the story of a struggling actress who makes her big break is a bit of a cliché I still think that it will be great. I am a glee fan and I find I am glad that this is sort of a more sophisticated glee. I really appreciate how much work must goes into these Broadway style dances.
If you can't tell from my previous comments I'm a crazy SMASH super fan! I love Josh Bergasse's choreography. It only adds to the story, and not distracts (which is what most TV show end up doing). Take Glee for example. There choreography doesn't add to the storyline. What they do is just show off the girl's bodies. That in my opinion does not further the storyline. Great job Josh with the work you have done, and keep up the good work in season 2!
