Shakespeare finalists named

post-gazette: Nearly 1,000 students, grades 4-12, strutted their stuff at the Pittsburgh Public Theater this week in the preliminaries of the 18th annual Shakespeare Monologue and Scene Contest. The judges were all Public Theater staff and actors in the company's current production of "As You Like It" - the young students providing as much refreshment for the theater professionals as the latter do for their audience.

I don't know what it is that attracts me to articles about getting the next generation involved in theater. As stated in other posts on similar articles, I think that sharing our craft and art with children is perhaps the most important thaing we can do. This particle article was interesting because it not only called middle and high school students, but children all the way down to the fourth grade. This is particularly wonderful because without training the next generation to appriciate art and theater, there will be no more in years to come. It's the continuation of this art form that allows it thrive.

I agree with Tim. Articles that walk about the next generation and how we involve them in the arts brings me joy. Having this opportunity for students right here in pittsburgh makes me a little prouder of our city and regional theatre. Having opportunities, even contests that encourage participation are wonderful. I am glad that CMU also has matinees for students and that I was working on a show last year that had a matinee geared toward students. I hope to see more opportunities like this though out the future and hope they continue when I have children.
