Autism-Friendly Broadway Shows: 2 More Planned After Success Of 'Lion King'

Huffington Post: Two more autism-friendly performances of Broadway musicals will be offered this spring and fall following the success last year of the first showing of a Broadway show specially altered for those diagnosed with the disorder. The Theatre Development Fund, a nonprofit organization focused on providing access to live theater, said Tuesday it plans to offer specially designed matinee showings of "Mary Poppins" on April 29 and "The Lion King" on Sept. 30.

This is an absolutely wonderful thing. It makes me so proud to be part of the theatre world when I read of events like this. It is true that theatre should be able to reach all audiences no matter who they are or what disability they might have. And what a great show to begin with. The Lion King already has vast amounts of visual stimulation past that of "normal" theatre and is also geared towards a younger audience to begin with. With so much positive response, I do hope that more events like this pop up across the country.

I agree-- its great that a lot is being taken into consideration for kids with autism, I think it's an even healthy environment for any child with or without autism as well. My mom always told me that when I was a tiny four year old, I was terrified of the Lion king, because of Scar, but ended up loving it a good while after. And I'm happy I learned to love it- the colors of the movie itself are phenomenal.. making going to see the Broadway show even more breathtaking! It's good to know that such a show won't be so terrifying for children, especially those who might be sensitive to loud noises, so they can enjoy the visuals and the story without all the fright!
